Guide to Pure Cotton Bedding

Welcome to Our Informative Guide on Pure Cotton Bedding

Discover the secrets to optimal sleep comfort with our comprehensive guide on pure cotton bedding. Here, we will unravel three key industry terms: Cotton, Yarn Count, and Thread Count.

Cotton

Cotton is the foundational material for yarn, and its quality is crucial for superior bedding. High-quality cotton, such as Giza Egyptian cotton, can sometimes be more expensive than silk.

  • Origin Labels: Labels like Pima and Egyptian cotton typically indicate the cotton's origin but do not always guarantee quality.
  • Staple Length: The staple length determines cotton quality, not just the place of origin. Long-staple cotton is essential for comfortable bedding.
  • Cost and Quality: Quality cotton comes at a cost. Besides price and texture, yarn count also serves as a reliable indicator of cotton quality.

Nebula Grass’s Sateen-100 and Sateen-140 bedding, made from long-staple Pima cotton, promise a soft, smooth feel and long-lasting durability. Our Sateen-200 is made from long-staple Giza Egyptian cotton, offering a more luxurious experience.

Yarn Count

In bedding, the English Cotton Count (denoted as "s") expresses yarn count. This system, though complex, essentially relates to the yarn's fineness.

  • Standard Bedding: Usually has a yarn count between 40s and 60s.
  • Hotel-Quality: Ranges from 60s to 80s.
  • Luxury Bedding: Varies from 100s to 200s.

A higher number indicates finer yarn, requiring sophisticated weaving techniques and superior cotton, resulting in softer, smoother, and shinier bedding.

Fabric is woven by yarns on warp and weft. The warp and weft yarns should have similar fineness for balance. From 100s upwards, the yarn becomes so delicate that two threads are often combined into one, equating to the thickness of a 50s yarn but offering a superior feel.

  • Nebula Grass's Sateen-100 bedding, with a blend of 50s warp and 100s weft, strikes an excellent balance between affordability and comfort.
  • Our Sateen-140 bedding, crafted with 140s yarns in both warp and weft, provides a luxurious feel distinct from most market offerings.
  • Our Sateen-200 bedding is made with 200s in warp and 140s in weft, resulting in an exceptionally smooth and luxurious fabric.

In North America, bedding retailers often omit yarn count, but it is crucial in explaining why certain bedding is significantly more expensive.

Thread Count

Thread Count (TC) refers to fabric density. After cotton is spun into yarn, it is woven into fabric. Fabric density reflects the number of yarns in a specific area. A higher thread count typically indicates a greater concentration of yarns.

  • Warp and Weft Values: Density is shown as "200x100", indicating 200 warp and 100 weft yarns per unit area. For simplicity, thread count usually sums the warp and weft yarns, so "200x100" becomes a 300 thread count.

Thread count is often misrepresented in the North American market. Most bedding products claiming over 600 thread count fall into misleading advertising. Yarns from 100s upwards are so fine that two strands are usually combined into one, still considered a single thread in thread count calculation.

Thus, if two bedding sets both have a 300 thread count but use different yarn counts (e.g., 60s vs. 100s), there will be a significant price and feel difference. At Nebula Grass, we strive for transparency, naming our bedding series by yarn count and clearly indicating their thread counts.

  • A 300 thread count is ideal for household use, offering softness and breathability.
  • For a luxurious texture and silky finish, consider options with 400+ thread count.

Why Pure Cotton?

High-quality pure cotton bedding benefits both adults and children with superior breathability, softness, moisture control, and hypoallergenic properties.

  • Maintenance: Easier to maintain than silk.
  • Eco-Friendly: More eco-friendly than synthetic materials.
  • Static Prevention: Prevents static electricity during dry winter conditions.

Though quality cotton bedding may come with a higher price tag, it is a valuable long-term investment, significantly enhancing your sleep comfort and overall health.
